Customer service CV example

This is a full CV for a fictional advisor, Sam Taylor. The employers, phone number and figures are made up. Use the shape, then replace every line with work you can explain in an interview.

A UK customer service CV does not need a photo, a date of birth, or a marital status. It does need the role you want, evidence from real conversations, and words a recruiter can match to the advert.

Sam Taylor

Manchester · 07700 900128 · sam.taylor@example.com

Eligible to work in the UK · full-time or four days

Personal statement

Customer service advisor with four years of shop and contact-centre work. I explain a billing problem in plain English, write down what was promised, and stay with the customer until that promise is booked. Looking for an advisor role where first-contact resolution matters more than reading a script faster.

Experience

Customer service advisor

Larkspur Energy (fictional supplier) · June 2023 – present

  • Handle inbound calls and web chat about bills, meter readings and failed payments for domestic customers.
  • In a made-up sample week, agreed a new payment date on 78 of 100 billing calls and emailed the confirmation before ending the call.
  • Rewrote the three questions we ask before a transfer, so the next advisor gets the account number, the promise and the deadline.
  • Flag vulnerable customers in the CRM note, using the wording the quality team published, and book the callback in the same screen.

Service desk colleague

Marrow & Finch (fictional retailer) · September 2021 – May 2023

  • Logged returns and delivery queries on the shop floor, then moved to the service desk after six months.
  • Checked the carrier scan before promising a replacement, which stopped customers coming back for an update we did not have.
  • Closed the till and wrote the evening handover: outstanding orders, staff off sick, and any complaint still open.

Education

  • Level 3 Customer Service Practitioner apprenticeship, completed 2022
  • A levels in English Language and Business, 2021

Skills

  • Complaint handling and de-escalation
  • CRM notes another advisor can act on
  • Billing, refunds and delivery exceptions
  • Inbound calls and web chat
  • Clear spoken and written English
  • Basic spreadsheets for a callback list

Personal statement examples

Four to six lines are enough. Name the role, give one proof, and say what you want next. Cut “passionate team player” unless the next sentence shows it.

First paid role: “Shop assistant looking for a first customer service advisor job. For two years I handled returns, booked deliveries and explained delays without a script. I want a contact-centre role where I learn the systems and still own the problem until it is booked.”

Advisor, the level in the CV above: keep Sam Taylor’s statement if it matches your evidence. Change the years, the channel (phone, chat, email, face to face) and the kind of problem you actually solve.

Senior advisor: “I still take complaints, and I coach new starters on the first five minutes of a call. I use call notes to find the question we should have asked before a transfer. I want a role that mixes customer contact with training, not a move away from customers.”

Skills worth listing

List a skill only if a bullet above, or one you can add, shows you using it. A skills block with nothing behind it is easy to skip.

  • Finding the actual problem before offering a fix
  • De-escalation when someone is angry about a bill or a missed delivery
  • CRM notes that include the promise, the deadline and the account reference
  • Billing, refunds, replacements and delivery exceptions
  • Inbound calls, web chat or email, named separately if you have done them
  • Writing to a customer in plain English, including a summary of what happens next
  • A simple spreadsheet or callback list, if you have kept one accurate
  • Spotting a vulnerable customer and following the process you were given

Bullet examples

A useful bullet says what you did, what it was about, and how you closed it. Numbers help only when you can show how they were counted.

  • Talked a customer through a failed direct debit, set the new date on the account, and sent the confirmation before ending the call.
  • Checked the carrier scan before promising a replacement, and told the customer the real window instead of “it will be there tomorrow”.
  • Moved a repeat complaint off email and onto one owner, with the previous promises pasted into the note.
  • Asked for the meter reading before transferring a billing call, so the next person did not start from zero.
  • Wrote the evening handover with open callbacks, not a line that said “busy shift”.
  • Coached a new starter through their first complaint by listening on mute and debriefing the opening question, not the whole personality.

Common mistakes

  • A profile made of adjectives and no example.
  • Duties copied from the advert: “responsible for delivering excellent customer service”.
  • A photo, age, marital status, or full home address. City and a phone number are enough.
  • One CV posted at a sales role and a complaints role without moving the evidence.
  • Keywords hidden in white text. It does not help a reader, and some systems flag it.
  • American spelling. In the UK, call the document a CV.
  • A team result written as if you did it alone. Say what your part was.
  • An email address you no longer open.

ATS keywords

Use a keyword when the advert asks for it and your CV already shows it. Do not add a word you would freeze on if someone said “talk me through that”.

  • customer service
  • customer service advisor
  • contact centre
  • inbound calls
  • complaint handling
  • de-escalation
  • first-contact resolution
  • CRM
  • customer satisfaction
  • billing enquiries
  • after-sales support
  • written communication
  • refunds and replacements
  • vulnerable customers

FAQ

Should a customer service CV be one page or two?

One page is enough when you have under about three years of relevant work. Two pages is fine when each line earns its place. Do not shrink the type to force a single page.

Do I need a photo on a UK customer service CV?

No. Leave off a photo, your date of birth and your marital status. Put your city, a phone number, an email address, and that you are eligible to work in the UK if that is true.

What if I have no contact-centre experience?

Use shop, reception, hospitality or volunteering where you handled a question, a complaint or a queue. Say what the person needed and what you did next. Do not invent call-centre metrics.

How do I add keywords without stuffing the CV?

Take the must-haves from the advert and show them in a bullet you can defend. If you have not done the task, leave the keyword out.
